A study was trying to find the critical mass of distinguishing features that is required before a group of people will start to form "us" and "them" relationships. They wanted to test how "much" difference there needed to be between groups before the groups shows "one of us" or "other" tendencies.

Skin color. Shirt color. Eye color. Hair color. Left handed right handed. Tall short. Male female. First name starts with a vowel or a consonant. People who think Friends is good or bad.
People who were randomly assigned an even number or an odd number.
No matter how insignificant of the marker of an identity those running the study used, clicks started to form around the identity.
