This is an argument from Yuval Noah Harari, but I more or less agree with it.
Intelligence and consciousness are not the same thing.
- Intelligence is the ability to *think*.
- Consciousness is the ability to *feel* or *experience*.
Computers and AI are, almost inarguably, "intelligent" – but they (probably) aren't "conscious". However, [[Defining life & consciousness is hard.]] So maybe we've accidentally created consciousness when we started creating LLMs. Who knows.
