**Pairwise comparison** is a term for a general ranking technique in which you approach a mass of options by pitting them against each other two at a time. This is a good means of creating **objective, quantitative data** out of subjective, qualitative opinions. Thus it's quite useful in psychology; but that's not its only use.
# Uses
- finding the best option for lunch in a group by presenting a series head-to-head "Jimmy John's or Taco Bell" type comparisons to members of the group
- finding options with the highest (or lowest) [[Correlation Coefficient]]s - either with a [[Matrices|Matrix]] or a [[Pairwise Plot]]
- Stand-Up Maths' Matt Parker used pairwise comparison to come up with an alternative to the Schmidt sting pain index
