Radio Frequency Identification and Near-Field Communication are two very similar pieces of technology. The key difference is the distance at which they operate, which is why they were separately designed.
Near Field Communication uses **magnetic fields** to induce current on an inductive wire coil, which powers the chip to do its thing.
Radio Frequency Identification uses radio waves to induce that current.
