First off - this is not a possible thing to do. I was thinking about _satisfaction_, the thing we all ultimately want to get from life, while listening to [[Thinking Fast and Slow]]'s overview of [[Frugal Models]]. It got me thinking about what components would go into an equations whose result would be some measure of _life satisfaction_. Obviously no such equation can exist, and it's all ultimately up to each of us to determine for ourselves what we want from life, what gives us the satisfaction of having done things right. This doesn't, though, mean that there wouldn't be common themes that would show up in _most_ formulas, if they did exist. The themes, like the components of frugal models, would work best if they were both _independent/orthogonal_ and at least mostly _representative of the whole_. My best guess would be that my own life satisfaction "formula" would involve these terms: - **meaning** - or "purpose" - why I'm here, doing the things I'm doing - **joy** - or "fun" - the embodiment of [[Pleasure vs Enjoyment|realized pleasure]], the "eat more ice cream" - **relationships** - or "connection" - the quality of your friends & family, and how much you get to be with them - **health** - the [[Health is Vague|ability to enjoy the fruits of life free from undue pain of any kind]] - **security** - or "safety" - free from worry or [[Anxiety]] about losing that which is important - **growth** - or "progress" - feeling improvements in yourself, or the situations you're trying to affect - **agency** - or "freedom" - feeling like you've the ability to dictate what you want to do > [!tldr] Satisfaction = meaning x joy x relationships x health x security x growth x agency Now if only there were objective measures of each of the above & life satisfaction itself I could do a multiple [[Regression Testing]] to find the right coefficients. (Only joking, although [[Homo Deus]] author Yuval Hoah Harari did suggest that we're moving towards a world where measuring things like these and optimizing them with [[Artificial Intelligence]] & [[BioTech, InfoTech, & Utopia|better biotech]] within our grasp). A semi-practical application of these would be to come up with some objective-ish criteria for each, in the form of questions. You could then ask yourself those questions when you're feeling less-than-satisfied to give you some clues on areas where you might be able to figure out [[What's Working, What Needs Attention, and What You're Doing About It Diagram|what's working and what's not]]. This is more or less what my [[Low Energy Script]] is doing. **** # More ## Source - [[Myself]] ## Related -
