This thought experiment kept me up a couple nights ago.
If life were a day, if during your 16 1/2 waking hours you aged from 0 to 85, you'd be living 5 years every hour. This is what it would look like.
- 7AM - 0 to 5 - For breakfast you'd have mashed vegetables and formula. Your parents would take you to daycare, but by the time you got there you'd need to go to the elementary school.
- 8AM - 5 to 10 - You'd spend the 2nd hour of your day learning how to really read and write, how to do the basics of math and start to understand how things work.
- 9AM - 10 to 15 - The 3rd hour of your day would be suddenly and awkwardly waking up to the idea that the people around you matter so much and there's this other gender and they're suddenly different and weird. Everything else can go on hold and your parents are lame.
- 10AM - 15 to 20 - The 4th hour of your day you'd don your graduation cap and be on your way off to university to study, notionally to study academic things, but really to study yourself in a completely new a different context. Your friends continue to dominate your life, but maybe your parents are pretty cool after all.
- 11AM - 20 to 25 - Around the time you start to get hungry for lunch you've donned your 2nd (and potentially 3rd) graduation cap and "begun life" all over again - this time on your own. At this point, if you're like most folks, you start thinking pretty seriously about marrying one of the people you've met in the past few hours.
- NOON - 25 to 30 - You're back from lunch and you're in a sweet spot. You've got energy, time, and you're starting to get money. You have learned a ton about the world, and you're continuing to learn about yourself and your partner. You might decide it's time to start a family.
- 1PM - 30 to 35 - Things, for the first time, start to feel like they are slowing doing, which somehow also makes them feel *faster*. Your body doesn't bounce back from exertion and injury the way it did mere hours ago. You can take care of yourself, but now yourself isn't all there is to take care of.
- 2PM - 35 to 40 - Around post-lunch energy crash you start to realize that this is what the next many hours might look like. The plates you've begun spinning seem to become more numerous and spin faster. You're no longer able to simply withdraw energy from the boundless supply you ad this morning, you need to prioritize taking care of yourself. Maybe some of those plates your spinning could be let go to spend more time with the others. You realize you haven't seen those friends from 2 hours ago much recently... but you've made your bed comfortable.
- 3PM - 40 to 45 - Honestly I don't know what happens in this big empty block below.
- 4PM - 45 to 50 -
- 5PM - 55 to 60 -
- 6PM - 65 to 70 -
- 7PM - 70 to 75 -
- 8PM - 75 to 80 -
- 9PM - 80 to 85 - At this point, I can only hope you are able to look back at your day, satisfied with what's transpired, knowing that you didn't waste a single hour. Sleep may come any time, and you still fear it, but you're also ready for the long night.
