HomeAssistant is an [[Open Source]], [[Self-Hosted]] smart home service with a huge range of compatible devices and a few core [[What are Principles|principles]] I can really get behind:
> [!success] HomeAssistant Principles
> 1. **Local** - devices talk to each other directly, not through the cloud
> 2. **Private** - all communication stays within your network, unless you want to open it up
> 3. **Open** - the code is open source, add-ons are developed by thousands
HomeAssistant can utilize many different [[Device-to-Device Communication Methods]]. Namely Z-wave, Zigbee, Wifi, and Thread/Matter. I've just begun to dip my toes into the deep wells of HomeAssistant's waters.
*Aside:* HomeAssistant's "[Concepts and Terminology](https://www.home-assistant.io/getting-started/concepts-terminology/)" page is a really great example of how to start explaining something. Someone involved did an excellent job there.
