**Grease the Groove** is a technique for frequently practicing meaningfully challenging, but not all-out repetitions of a desired skill. This repeated exposure to a stimulus hones your brains ability to respond. In essence, the "groove" you are "greasing" is the neurological synapses that need to [[Fire Together and Wire Together]]. This is [[Deliberate Practice]] using [[Spaced Repetition]]. > You're telling your brain "this is important. You need to get good at doing this." This terminology I've heard used in the realm of fitness and muscular strength, but the general concept should (I would imagine) apply to a huge variety of domains. Drawing. Coding. Any form of skill development or acquisition. ## The Importance of Periodization You cannot cram every repetition into a small window - that's basically just doing a regular workout[^1] - you must separate the groove greasing sessions temporarily to give the brain a chance to essentially "reset" so that you are, in effect, forcing it to go through the process from zero. Getting the cold start. ## Protocol for Strength Set of ~4 ish reps of 80% of your max, spaced out at least 10 minutes apart between sets. Enough for your brain to have de-activated those muscles. Basically this is [[Movement Snack]]s for strength gains.
