> [!tldr] A computer games storefront, but specializing in DRM-free distributions
Video games have no reason to be temporary. Something you played in 1997 has no reason to be lost to history. yet with the culture of *games as a service* and always online games – it's becoming more and more common to have games that simply **go away**. Good Old Games has a mission to preserve these *old* games that didn't stop being "good" just because they got old. [[Maintenance is Appreciation]], and these people appreciate games.
Steam is great - but even Steam is vulnerable to one day "going away" and taking your library with it. Or else Steam might decide you aren't who you say you are any more, or otherwise you may have account issues... and you'll be *separated* from your library.
**Good Old Games** is a competitor to Steam selling computer games **you've definitely heard of** directly to you, to keep, and run on your hardware as long as you have hardware. [[Cool Offline Technology|Even offline]].
- Hollow Knight
- Myst
- Silksong
- Hundreds of other games, including relatively modern classics like Cyberpunk: 2077, that I don't have yet
I plan on buying as many games through GOG as I can, shifting my primary gaming consumption there.
