After years of fighting against not wanting to use the most popular (by far) [[Obsidian]] community plugin, I've finally come to terms with it after realizing it *can* approximate what I'd like it to do - use [[SVG]]s rather than native [[Excalidraw]] formats. This finally satisfies my [[Only Use Obsidian Plug-ins That Retain Portability]] goals. ## How To 1. Install the `Excalidraw` plugin 2. In the plugin's `options > Basic` 1. Set an excalidraw folder 2. Toggle "use excalidraw folder when embedding a drawing" 3. In `options > Embedding Excalidraw into your Notes and Exporting > Export settings > Auto-export Settings` 1. Toggle on `Auto-export SVG` (or PNG, if you prefer) 2. Toggle on `Keep the .SVG and/or .PNG filenames in sync wiht the drawing file` 4. In `options > Embedding Excalidraw into your Notes and Exporting` 1. Set `Image type in markdown preview` to **SVG Image** 2. Set `Type of file to insert into the document` to **SVG** 3. If desired, toggle on `Embed link to drawing as comment` - this creates link to edit the SVG (effectively), which isn't visible in preview mode ## How it Works ![[Excalidraw in Obsidian 2026-01-10 12.10.45.excalidraw.svg]] %%[[Excalidraw in Obsidian 2026-01-10 12.10.45.excalidraw.md|🖋 Edit in Excalidraw]]%% **** # More ## Source - self
