This is one of those things that's obvious once you hear it, but otherwise might not ever cross your mind:
**Things that are easy to get are also easy to get addicted to.**
If it's hard to obtain X, then fewer people are likely to become addicted to X.
The book (thus far at least) stops short of outright saying ease of access is **causally linked** to [[addiction]], but I think that's in this case a pretty safe bet.
Juxtapose this with things that have become incredibly easy to access:

- social media
- gambling
- pornography
- so-called "rage bait" & "doom scrolling"
