Unlike almost any other note I have, this topic was perfectly and exhaustively and hilariously covered by one particular source that I cannot recommend highly enough. The graphic below is from [this article by Randall Munroe of XKCD fame](https://blog.xkcd.com/2010/05/03/color-survey-results/). The short story of this is that these color names were gathered from a survey of readers who were presented with various [[RGB]] color combos and asked to name them.
