If you lack the language to refer to something or describe it, you're limited in your ability to recognize it or reason around it. If you're thinking about some idea or exploring something wholly new without a given name... make up your own! Even if you find out later that the thing you're learning about actually *has* a name, that's no big deal. This is *similar* to the approach of using a [[Nonce]] - but a nonce is intended to be temporary and [[Organize by Context|context-dependent]]. If you start with a nonce, but then find yourself using said made-up term later on when you come across a similar situation, then you've essentially coined a term. I learning new languages also opens you up to concepts that have words *in other languages* that your native tongue doesn't. # Examples Frankly half [[my notes]] could be examples of terms someone has coined at some point. These come to mind. - [[Systems 1 & 2]] are both made up terms to make talking about those modes of thinking easier - [[Pomodoro Technique 🍅]] - someone somewhere made up a name for "focus for as long as this timer goes" - [[Decision Fatigue]] - the inability for [[System 2]] to make decisions and rationalize about things after time passes - [[Good Energy]] - is a wholly made up term representing health-producing behaviors - [[Flow]] - a term to describe the state of being fully present in an activity you're doing **** # More ## Source - [[Thinking Fast and Slow]] - A presentation by a dude at work ## Related -
