> [!tldr] The "card" is a ubiquitous design trope for a reason
This note is about *digital* "cards". A more general case for cards is made in [[Index Card Presentation]] and expanded on in [[Index Card Sized Module Templates]].
The idea of a "card" is an extremely common (arguably overplayed recently) design trope in information-rich UI/UX design. It's become more and more popular lately, but realistically have been around for forever.
Cards are just pretty & effective ways to encapsulate information, [[What are You Optimizing For|optimized for]] consumption by humans.
They are often, but not always, overlays on top of the page itself. Some pages are designed around a grid (for example) of cards.
Business Cards are physical versions of a Card-based interface.
Designing with "how would this be presented on a card" would be a good exercise when building systems, softwares, and models.
"Card" was entered into the vernacular of UI design with Google's "Material Design" in 2014. I *thought* that was the case, and verified it with ChatGPT.
