> [!tldr] A clear, large, valuable goal that cannot be achieved without substantial effort and rethinking
I don't like the name "Big Hairy Audacious Goals" - but I think simply lumping them into "[[Stretch Goals]]" in my head was a mistake. Stretch goals are more like "nice to have, if the other goals go well". A BHAG is a clear and usually simply-stated goal that requires substantial coordinated effort and/or rethinking of existing systems to accomplish.
A BHAG is not achievable by simply "optimizing" the current process. It requires stepping back to rethink how the system works fundamentally. You may not be able to utilize the technology you've used for years and years.
> [!example] Examples
> - From the book - women come into the clinic in the morning with breast lumps and leave knowing if its cancer and having a treatment plan the same day
> - Apple's iPhone Air - don't just shave a percent of a millimeter of the phone's thickness, cut it by more than 25%
> - We will get a man to the moon and return him safely back to earth before the end of the century
> - We will get a man to the moon and return him safely back to earth before the end of the decade
These are different from [[SMART Goals]] - which appeal only to the rational side of us and work better in managing steady state processes. The BHAGs appeal to both [[Elephant and Rider]], not only instructing what needs to be done but also compelling reasons *why*.
