5S is a method & philosophy for organizing your tools and context for productivity. Each of the "S"s are for Japanese words (it's a Japanese concept, I believe from [[The Toyota Way|Toyota]] and other [[LEAN Manufacturing]] innovators). They can be roughly translated as follows: 1. **Sort** - sort through what's needed & what's not needed, remove what's not needed 2. **Straighten**/**Store** - [[a place for everything]], and everything in its place - includes things like shadowboxes & whatnot 3. **Shine** - clean on a regular basis and use this as a time to also inspect 4. **Standardize** - establish procedures / schedules to ensure cleanliness & ready-to-work 5. **Sustain** - do the other 4 Ses without being told Apparently there's also "Safety" and/or "Spriti" as a 6th and/or 7th "S". Sure. Why not. What I like about 5S - it's approaching the *process* of work similar to [[More is Unnecessary, Less is Impossible.|Perfect Tool]] philosophy. Have what you need, not what you don't. It doesn't outright say do [[Monotasking|One Thing at a time]], but it feels like it. It's a good way to do stuff. **** # More ## Source -
