According to the Mayo Clinic (and some other sources I've found along the way):
> [!tip] 3500 calories = 1 pound of fat
# Truthfulness
> [!warning] it's probably more complicated
I've also seen statements saying this is a myth, the source I linked to down below even says "in the past, research has found..." which doesn't inspire great confidence that it's still accepted today. Then again, its the figure that comes up time and time again when looking for "[calories in a pound](https://www.google.com/search?q=calories+in+a+pound&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari)". Apparently the idea of a simple "500 calorie/day deficit for a week = 1lb lost" doesn't really hold up to [[Empirical]] observations.
